5 Minutes, 5 Sentences, 5 Marks

Answer in the Comments section of this blog:

Reader Response #1: Respond to the question “Who do you think is committing all of the murders? Give three reasons for your belief.” in the Comments section of the blog.

Reader Response #2: There is a difference between a friendship and an alliance. When you have a friendship, it is because you have something in common with someone and you like them; when you have an alliance, both people can gain something from the relationship. Are there any people on the island who have a friendship? If so, who? Is it possible to make a friend, given the circumstances? Explain your reasoning.

Reader Response #3: Respond to the question “How does the fact that the story takes place on an island affect the story? ” in the Comments section below. Give three specific ways in which the island influences the way the story progresses.

  1. Hopefully this goes here,

I think the murderer is Justice Wargrave. My first reason is that he is a judge and judges are supposed to be people of the law. No one would suspect him of murder because of his status. My second reason is that judges make a large amount of money, and the island with the house would cost a lot. He was also not seen for most of the last two chapters when the general was killed. That’s why I think Justice Wargrave is the killer.

    • Good reasoning skills! Judges do make a lot of money and who else could afford their own island? Aren’t you smart! I agree, too, that no one would suspect a judge. But wouldn’t we also not suspect a doctor? Or a religious person like Emily Brent? But I think you have me on the “who else could own an island?” idea. Maybe Anthony Marston but not anymore.

  2. I think the killer is Justice Wargrave for several reasons. First, he did a creepy smile when he went into his room on the first night someone got killed. Second, it’s always him that’s asking all the crimes on the island, and also he’s a judge so no one asked him about anything. Last, he’s the person that we know the least so far, he didn’t show up in a lot of chapters (maybe trying to avoid contact with others…?). These are the reasons why I think justice Wargrave is the murderer.

    • Having a creepy smile is always a clue! So far, 5 out of 5 people think it’s Justice Wargrave. If it’s not, that creepy smile of his is definitely doing him no good. Your reasons are good ones. You’re right. We don’t know much about him.

  3. I think that Justice Wargrave is the killer or U.N.Owen. I think it is him because he is the one accusing everyone and trying to get to the bottom of the problem. He has been rueling certin people out as if he knows more than he is telling everyone. He cant know too much about everyone because he has only known them for a short amout of time. Justice looks like the best suspect.

    • I think you are on the winning team, Chanel. Everyone who has posted seems to agree with you. I read the book approximately 3,000,000 years ago and I can’t remember who the murderer was. But you are all making me suspicious of the judge!

  4. I think that Justice Wargrave is the killer, for various different reasons. First off, he spends little time with the ther guests, hardly any at all, and this doesn’t seem to affect how much he knows about UN Owen, and what’s going on. Also, the scene of him going to bed seems rather suspicious. Lastly, it seems the most plausible that he would know something about everyone, and their crimes, since he is a judge. Some of the cases might’ve gone through him, or he would’ve at least heard about them from his colleagues. All this shows that Justice Wargrave is UN Owen.

    • Interesting. I agree that he might have heard about the cases through his colleagues. That is completely logical. Was he from London? London in the 1930s for a judge would have been like working in a small village. The Law Courts are all in one area and they’d know each other. Good point. You’re right about not spending time with the other guests — in a normal sense, that is. He spends all his time interrogating them!

    • Oh, my. I’ve checked my mark book and I haven’t received any work from a Rawr Lion all year. Are you sure you’re in my part of the zoo? I’ll need to know your real name for the 5 marks! And you know what else? I’ll need five sentences, too. I’ll excuse you because I’m impressed that you can even write. It must be hard to hold a pen with those big paws.

  5. I think U.N Owen is the one who did not murder anyone. Owen basically is the person that stands back and watches how things go throughout the mystery. Mrs.Owen is also the host as well as Mr.Owen. Her actual name is Una Nancy Owen. They were away at the time when the guests notice a nursery rhyme ” Ten Little Soldiers”.Some of the cases might’ve gone through him, or he would’ve at least heard about them from his colleagues. All this shows that Justice Wargrave is UN Owen.

  6. Ha! I was wondering if you thought there was a real U. N. Owen and now I see you think it’s a pseudonym for Justice Wargrave. I agree that he would have heard some of the cases. It’s been interesting reading all these comments. People are ticked off at Emily Brent for being judgmental, but not at the judge. Interesting, isn’t it? I read this book so long ago I can’t remember the ending. I’m glad people are telling me who the killer is. I want to be surprised.

  7. Paragragh :Are there any people on the island who have a friendship? If so, who? Is it possible to make a friend, given the circumstances?

I think Philip Lombard and Dr. Edward George Armstrong have a potential to become friends. This is into consideration because they both seem to have a lot of general knowledge. As Philip used to be a mercenary soldier in Africa, and Armstrong being a doctor, they both would have a straight forward mind. I don’t think that at the time there are any major friendship bonds between anyone in the story. But as I said, there are quite a few of potentials.

  8. Paragragh: Who do you think the killer is?

I think the killer is Armstrong. Mainly because Armstrong is trying to play a very innocent role. I thought of it being Justice Wargrave, but too many people seem to be saying the same thing so instead of Wargrave I chose Armstrong to add a curious touch. Armstrong is also a doctor, so he would know a lot about how to cover up things, the right spot to shoot etc… The other characters showed a bit too much obvious reasons that they could be the killer, but it’s always the other way round when it comes to murder mystery’s. Over-all, I consider the killer to be Armstrong because of the strong innocent’s he’s playing.

  9. I think that it is possible to have a friendship on this island even if there is a murderer on the island aswell. Because if it wern’t for having a friendship everyone would start getting more scard on this island because they would know less about the other people on the island. An example of having a friendship is Lombard and Vera becasue they are always speaking to each other and talking about who they think the murderer is.And I think that is good because being together they have a better chance staying alive becasue they would be together and begin to trust each other.
