  1. The boys should follow Ralph because he’s smart and mature. Hes one of the most reasonable people on the island. The kids are already used to ralph. And If jack was leader the little ones would have a really bad time.

    • You only wrote four sentences but they were four good sentences so you get the five marks! Next time, write the five sentences, though, okay? I think you are absolutely right, Ralph is reasonable. He doesn’t demand things the kids can’t possibly do and Jack would do that. We’re getting to a part that you will find really interesting. The story is going to go up a notch and you will see a lot more of Jack’s character.

  2. ralf because he i s reasonable not like jack who just wants to kill .ralf wants to do the right things and he wants the kids to be reasonable too because he lnows that thats the way to survive on fhe island.

  3. I believe the boys should follow Ralph because he is more common sense. Jack doesn’t seem to want to be off the island. Ralph seems to know what is important while Jack wants power and bloodshed. I believe they should follow ralph

  4. I think that the boys should follow Ralph because he is a big representation of parents. He is looking out for the boys, and is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the boys are safe. He makes sure they have shelter, food and water. Just like any parent would do if they were stranded on the island. Jack represents immaturity and malicious. While Ralph thinks things through and is very mature. He takes on a parent role for all the children, big or small.

    • I’m sure that’s why poor old Ralph keeps falling apart. It would be one thing to be the parent of twenty kids but it’s another thing to be a parent at twelve! I always feel so sorry for him when he falls apart. But he’s a strong little fellow. Wait ’til you see the end. (But don’t read ahead!) :)

  5. I think the boys in Lord lf the Flies should be a follower of Ralph as his beliefs seem to be more moral. He has reasoning behind his actions and his actions seem more beneficial to helping the boys survive through the island or even get rescued. Jack has made some vital mistakes as they had a chance to get rescued if Jack did not try to go through on what he mainly wanted, which was killin pigs. Ralph attempts to treat everyone equally and has a system in which everyone has a chance to speak what they think causing some kind of system of democracy on the island. Ralph seems to have more equality and sense on how to survive on an island and rescued, and even if Jack’s leadership role sounds more fun, Ralph’s leadership will help them survive.

    • I completely agree with your assessment of Ralph; he has a moral quality that is very strong. I think, too, that part of why the kids listen to Ralph is because he has the aura of a rich boy. They see the top of the class system in Ralph and the bottom in Piggy. I find their dismissal of Piggy kind of sad. He has some of the same qualities as Ralph but he just doesn’t have the self-confidence and charisma.

  6. I think the boys should follow Ralph over Jack. Jack is too focused on killing and just dominating the island. Ralph’s ideas are more realistic and will most likely get them rescued earlier. I also have a feeling Ralph will keep his sanity longer, which will help the group. Ralph has also proven to be smarter and wants the best for the group.

    • The idea that Ralph will keep his sanity longer is an interesting one, Eric. So you assume many of the boys will go insane? It would be absolutely horrifying if Jack went insane. He’s pretty frightening in his normal state. If he went insane he’d be like a serial killer. I think you had a very reasoned, reasonable, good response.

  7. I think the boys should follow Ralph. Ralph is a more reasonable leader. Jack just wants to kill things. Ralph wants to be rescued and has been creating things like the fire and the shelters to help them get rescued. Ralph is also very democratic which helps the boys make decisions.

    • This is interesting considering you’re the one reading Jack! I think you’d understand him the most. I agree, Ralph is more reasonable. If he can keep his brain working he’s the one to trust!

  8. The boys should follow Ralph. Jack is being to violent he has no consern for other people or getting rescued. All Jack wants to do is kill pigs and be meen to piggy

  9. I belive the boys shouls follow Ralph. Ralph has done a very good job so far handeling all of the boys, organizing them so they can be rescued. Ralph is also the only one on the island who still has reason. If the boys were to follow Jack, then chaos would insue. Without order and reason from Jack, the boys will never be rescued.

    • I could not agree with you more!!! Ralph’s leadership includes everyone and he has delegated responsibility to Piggy for the littl’uns. That shows his leadership ability. Jack would cheerfully let the littl’uns fall off a cliff so he wouldn’t have to deal with them … which he doesn’t do anyway!

  10. The boys should follow Ralph. They should follow Ralph because he is a good leader and will keep them safe. Ralph will also get them reascued and knows how to keep them in there place. Lastly Ralph treats everyone equally. He also think of more than just killing pigs.

  11. I think the boys should follow Ralph. Ralph is a realist, he understands the danger of staying on the island and what needs to be done to survive. Ralph is also focused, he was focused when he and Simon were building shelters but he also is staying focused on getting off of the island by keeping a large fire going on the mountain. Furthermore, Ralph is intelligent, he will be the one to get the boys of the island because of the effort he puts in to be resuced.

    • These are excellent reasons, Lauren. I think Ralph is the only one who keeps the big picture, as well. Piggy sees what Ralph sees but he gets personally hurt and veers off into resentment. Ralph doesn’t. Of course, Piggy has way more emotional baggage in the first place. Ralph has probably had a pretty happy, structure life before he even gets there.

  12. The Boys should choose Ralph as their leader because he has a sensible mind, he knows what he is doing, and he actually knows was to get off the island. Jack has a sensible mind her cares for all the children on the island and is constantly working on giving them a structured life on the island. Ralph knows what he is doing. the fire is a good example of this, he make sure a fire is going so perhaps they will be seen and reused. This leads me to my next point Ralph is cornered about them being rescued, ware Jack just wants to go and hunt pigs and Piggy. over all I believe Jack would make the most seance as leader.

    • I agree!!!! I would never in 3 trillion years vote for Jack. In fact, I would hide either in a cave or at the top of a tree. Jack is one scary boy. Ralph is a kind, smart boy and hopefully, he won’t lose his mind. This is a tough experience for a twelve year old! Can you imagine actually going through this? It would be horrible.

  13. I believe the boys should follow Ralph because he has the ability to think about his actions for future success. From the beginning Ralph has made the goal to leave the island top priority, which is why the fire is so important. Ralph also thinks about others safety, which is why he built everyone’s huts instead of just his own.
And then there’s Jack… Jack is more of “now” kind of thinker, there’s no real way of describing Jacks goals, all you can say is that if he wants it, he’ll get it. Which brings up the question whats next, all Jack wanted was to kill a pig, and now that he has whats next? but we will have to wait for that answer.

There’s also the kids. In a way you could say that Ralph and Jacks want’s represent our goals, and we are the kids. We begin a long term goal (fire) that interests us, and we stick to it. But then we are presented with short “fun” goals (killing pigs) that yields a more instant reward, so we do them to pass the time. At this point one of two thinks happens, we ether remain on task and complete the long term goal (which deep down we know is the superior option) or we forget about it and only remember once its too late.

I know I’ve been rambling on but I’m almost done. Now with that mind set we realize that long term goals and thinking of the future is better, and since Ralph represents long-term goals, Ralph is the superior leader.

(TL;DR) Ralph represents future and future is good.

  14. 5 MARKS #1
I found the first set of faces interesting. I feel the guy portaried in them looks very disturbed, almost like he has had a shady past. His expression is telling us i did something very wrong. As to what caused this change in expression i believe it looks like they are concentrating on something and think about what it is, such as one of those eye puzzles.

    • Brad, just imagine what they have seen in Afghanistan! I put the photos there as kind of Lord of the Flies parallel. If you showed Ralph when he dropped onto the island and when he’s so stressed out he can’t keep a thought in his head, you’d probably see him looking like one of the middle photos of the soldiers.

  15. 5 MARKS #3
The biggest fear the boys face is not killing each other….. Eventually it seems they are going to go insane and therefore kill each other. we can especially tell this from the tension between Ralph and Jack, aswell as Piggy and Jack.. The littleunes are already crazy, So the biguns will probably start to kill each other off.

  16. Interesting observation that the littl’uns are already “crazy.” They barely had any socialization so there wasn’t much to lose. They become like little animals because Golding thinks it is only society that makes us “human.” Left to our own devices, we’d be like a pack of wolves, he thinks. And so he gives us Jack as the prime example. You’ll see more of this as the book goes on.

  17. Response #1: When looking at the pictures of men and women, they show a different emotion on their face in each picture. The most dramatic changes for me, were the 5th set of pictures. The first picture the man looks worn, tired and weak. Not weak in the sense he has no strength, but weak in the sense that he is exhausted from whatever troubles he just endured. The second picture, he look hardened. Like the experiences from the first picture no longer burden him, like they have become a routine he has gotten used to. In the third picture, the man looks stronger. No happier, but almost optimistic. Like he has finally gone through the troubles he had to, and now he can move on.

    • Wow!!!! Excellent reply. You have such a GOOD mind, Willow!! Your observations are very insightful. Did you look at Mitch’s observations, too? You both really understood the depth of those photos.

  18. I think the boys are afraid because they see it in eachothers eyes. They dont want to be afraid therefore they try to act like everything is okay and it is nothing bad but when someone sees fiar in anothers eyes they beggin to reconsider the situation and belive that theres is evil in the water and in the air.I believe it is all because deep down they know it might be true eventhough some of the children dont want to believe it.young children can’t make proper decisions by themselves therefore they just copu what others are doing, saying and feeling.

  19. The boys on the island should follow Ralph rather than Jack or Piggy.Piggy is important on the island because he dorsnt like too fool around but none of the other children take him seriousle and would not follow his orders. And Jack is a mean, full of himself and ignorant child who likes to bully other. Therefore Ralph should be the leader of the group of children because he is the most mature and risponsible child on the islad. He wants rules and people who follow those rules. He doesnt want immature children running around the island and maybe exposing themselves to danger especially when there is litle children on the island.Ralph is alot like a parent to the children thats why he should be the leader and the rest should follow him and his orders.

  20. Reading Response #3:

The greatest fear the boys face is the fear of each other. The lack of order and discipline is starting to have an affect on the boys. This is the most obvious in the last chapter before the boys are rescued. Ralph had no fear of starvation, dehydration, or fear of a beast, he was in fact in fear of his life after the boys came after him. All of the Beasts are simply the boys mind making up something to hide the fear of each other.

  21. First Impressions of Piggy & Ralph:
My first impressions of Ralph was that he seemed to be the most level headed one. He seemed to have the most realistic understanding of what needed to be done in order to survive. He knew how to execute that plan as well. I thought Piggy was a follower. Without his Aunty to protect him on the island I was not sure if he would survive. Piggy seemed to need a very assertive authority figure to look after him.

  22. Hi Ms. Watson,
If you look on my blog, my responses are there and if there is anything else I am missing could you let me know. Thank you!
